Top Level Domain (TLD)
Top Level Domain is the label that follows the last dot of a fully qualified domain name. For example, with www.gossamar.com the TLD is “.com”. With www.inbound-marketing-automation.ca it is “.ca”.
Although there are generic TLDs like .com, .gov, .edu, there are also country-specific TLDs using the ISO country code. For example: .ca for Canada, .us for USA, .uk for Britain, etc.
The country code TLDs are important for geo-targeting in SEO as some search engines use the TLD to help align searchers with a suitable geographically-close site.
