Social Media
Social Media platforms or outlets consist of individuals or organizations, or both, brought together because they share common values, ideals or interests.
There are 9 distinct types of media:
- Social media networks such as mySpace, facebook and LinkedIn
- Blogs – usually a person’s personal viewpoint, but with comments from any readers turning it into a form of social expression centered around a topic or worldview
- Micro-Blogging Sites like Twitter, called so because the size of each “post”, tweet in Twitter terms, is limited to 140 characters
- Social bookmarking sites such as Digg, Delicious and Stumbleupon
- Social media sharing sites such as Flickr and YouTube
- Forums – typically discussion boards or “on line water-coolers,” allowing for the free expression and exchange of ideas between like-minded people
- Review or rating sites such as BizRate
- News aggregators which consolidate news into categories allowing for easier monitoring and analysis
- Virtual worlds such as SecondLife.
