I came across an interesting post over at Newsfactor.com today that is relevant to all Inbound Marketing Automation professionals.
According to a July study by iPhone-AppQuotes: “What was once among application developers a 50-50 split between producing b2b applications and b2c applications is now a 70-30 split in favor of business applications. Medical, education, business and book applications are the most requested categories of applications in the Apple App Store, according to a recent report.”
At the time of the study, the App Store held 85,000 applications, 17,000 of which were aimed at business-to-business. And 2 billion people had downloaded an app at the time of the study!
My iPhone runs our CRM software (Salesforce.com) and our Inbound Marketing Automation software (Pardot’s Prospect Insight). When a sales lead in our system goes “hot” my iPhone tells me about it. In true Mae West style, its happiness at delivering the news makes it vibrate in my pocket.
If you’ve been watching the industry trends, the growth of mobile is now seen as the next big thing. I can’t think of a better way to express the reason why, than to quote this: “Thanks to the iPhone 3G and, to a lesser extent, Google’s Android phone, millions of people are now walking around with a gizmo in their pocket that not only knows where they are but also plugs into the Internet to share that info, merge it with online databases, and find out what – and who – is in the immediate vicinity…Simply put, location changes everything. This one input – our coordinates – has the potential to change all the outputs. Where we shop, who we talk to, what we read, what we search for, where we go – they all change once we merge location and the Web.”

So what does it all mean for Inbound Marketing Automation? Well for starters, if your website and its contents don’t work on a mobile device you’re already losing out.
But more importantly, think of the time-savings, convenience and opportunity to impress which lies behind carrying your office, online store and personal computer around with you at all times. And by opportunity to impress I don’t mean your girlfriend with a neat piece of technology; I mean one of your b2b prospects when she’s just signed off from your site and you call her to discuss the price list she was looking at a moment ago. All because you have some sophisticated inbound marketing automation software running on your website on a machine in your pocket.
